How to Apply to University in the UAE: Step-by-Step (2026)
A step-by-step guide to applying to universities in the UAE — admission requirements, EmSAT and IELTS, documents, deadlines and how to get accepted, for residents and international students.
Applying to a university in the UAE is straightforward once you understand the requirements. This guide walks you through the whole process, from choosing a shortlist to accepting your offer, for both residents and international students.
Step 1: Shortlist your universities
Start by narrowing down universities that offer your program within your budget. Use our comparison tool to line up tuition fees, rankings and scholarships side by side, and be realistic about entry requirements for competitive fields like medicine and engineering.
Step 2: Check admission requirements
Most UAE universities require a high school certificate (or equivalent, attested where needed) with a minimum average, plus proof of English proficiency. Common requirements include:
- High school certificate — minimum 60–90% depending on the university and program
- English proficiency — IELTS 5.5–6.5, TOEFL 79+, or EmSAT English 1100–1400
- EmSAT scores — the national standardized test, required by many universities (especially government ones)
- Program prerequisites — e.g. maths and physics for engineering, biology and chemistry for medicine
Step 3: Prepare your documents
- Attested high school certificate and transcripts
- Passport copy and Emirates ID (for residents)
- Passport-size photos
- English test results (IELTS/TOEFL) or EmSAT scores
- Any portfolio or entrance-test results for specific programs
Step 4: Apply and pay the application fee
Most universities let you apply online. Submit your application with the required documents and pay the application fee (usually AED 200–500). Apply early — many universities offer early-admission scholarships and fill popular programs quickly.
Step 5: Interviews, tests and your offer
Some programs (medicine, architecture, performing arts) require an interview, aptitude test or portfolio review. Once assessed, you'll receive an offer letter. Accept it, pay the deposit, and the university will help arrange your student visa if you're an international student.
